Summary
“Services” is an alphabetical list of all programs and applications installed on your computer. One of the first things to verify when encountering problems with SQL is its listing in the “Services” window. When you open the “Services” window you are checking for two things: 1. SQL is listed and 2. SQL is running. This article focuses on number 1 of that process, and how to re-install the software if it is not listed.
Tools You Will Need
· Computer
- Admin access on your computer so you can download new program
· In order to download files on your compute you will need admin access. If you are unsure if you have admin access, follow the steps listed on this site: http://oit.ncsu.edu/antivirus/administrator-account.
· Close all programs and windows before beginning, including error messages and other dialogue boxes. Your computer should be in a neutral state.
Step-by-Step
1. Go to the Start Menu at the bottom left of your screen, and select the program “Run”. (If you do not see “Run,” search for it in the search field and then open the program.)
2. Type “services.msc” into the text box, and click “OK”.
3. This will pull up a window that looks like this:
Scroll down to the program titled “SQL Server (SQL EXPRESS)”.
Note: In order to see the full name you may need to extend the “Name” field. To do this, double-click on the seam between the “Name” field and the “Description” field.
This example shows the program listed. Yours may not be listed.
If you see the program listed you will want to verify that the program is running. Do not continue with this article. See article “When services are not running” for more information.
If you do not see the program “SQL Server (SQL Express)” listed you will need to re-install. You can re-install in one of two ways depending on your current internet connectivity.
If you are not connected to the internet, use Option 1.
If you are connected to the internet, we recommend Option 2, as you will get the most up-to-date version of the software.
Re-install Option 1: No internet available
1. Close out of the “Services” window. Go to “My Computer” and locate the C: drive. Note: On some computers the file may be listed just as “Computer.”
2. Open the “WinScan98” folder.
3. Open the “SSE” folder.
4. Double-click on the file marked “SQLEXPR.EXE”.
5. This will start an install setup wizard for two programs. One of the programs is the SQL Database and the other is SQL Server Management Studio Express. Follow the instructions on the screen by clicking “Next,” until the screen says “Install successful” or something similar for both installs.
Note: If the install is not successful, look at what failed to install? Was it MSXML? Go to SQL Server Error - MSXML Error on install.
6. Close all windows and programs and restart your computer.
7. Open your MyoVision software. The problem should be resolved.
Re-install Option 2: Connected to internet

3. Click on the download button.
4. You may be prompted with a window to “Run” or “Save” the install wizard. Click “Run.”
5. Follow the prompts on the installation wizard, by clicking “Next” until the screen says “Install successful” or something similar.
6. After the installation, close all windows and restart the computer.
7. Open your MyoVision software. The problem should be resolved.
